ASA Miami Hoops' Anthony Gomes Signs with University of West Florida

HIALEAH, FL. - Anthony Gomes has signed a scholarship to continue his collegiate career with the University of West Florida. UWF is an NCAA Division-II program in Pensacola, Florida. The Argonauts are the reigning Gulf South Conference champions. During the 2017-2018 season, West Florida took on Mississippi State to open the year (losing 87-62) then followed it up by winning 12 straight games. The Argonauts then won 16 of its final 19 games before falling to Barry University in the NCAA South Regional Tournament.

University of West Florida head coach Jeff Burkhamer, who's entering his fourth year leading the Argonauts and was named the Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year this past season, spoke highly of Gomes.

"Anthony is a really athletic wing who can score the ball. He shoots the three, gets to the rim, and makes plays for others," Burkhamer said in a UWF release. "Anthony gives us another quality guard. He comes in with college game experience after playing in the very tough Florida junior college ranks."

Gomes will leave ASA Miami owning several accolades and records during his two years under Silver Storm men's basketball head coach Jean Dubuisson. Gomes is the programs all-time leading scorer with 809 points and really flourished his sophomore year averaging 19.5 points-per-game, 4.4 rebounds-per-game and 4.2 assists-per-game. He finished his sophomore season in 2017-2018 as the fourth leading scorer in Region VIII, which includes every NJCAA Division-I school in the state of Florida. Gomes also holds the single-game scoring mark of 39 points against Palm Beach State College on February 27th, 2018. In January, Lineage of Champions released their 2018 Florida Junior College Rankings and listed Gomes as the 39th best JUCO player in the state of Florida. LOC's ranks are based off evaluations in ability, potential, production and projection. 

Gomes enrolled at UWF during the fall of 2018 and begin studying Business Administration. During his prep carer, Gomes played for Shane Whitsett at Poinciana High School in Orlando, Florida. He was named 2014-15 Osceola First-Team All-County, 2014 Defensive Player of the Year and 2015 Offensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the Osceola County All-Star game in 2015.
